Schule Schloss Salem stands up for democracy
by Julia Rieß, Public Relations
As part of the Germany-wide campaign day "#IStandUp - Schools for Democracy and Diversity", pupils at Schule Schloss Salem also got creative.

Most teachers and classes took part and literally stood up for democracy. With hands-on activities, discussions with prominent supporters, and practical programmes for teachers, the initiative of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Heidehofstiftung, together with ZEIT and ARD, aims to help raise awareness of democracy.

Head Master Henrik Fass also stood up and said: "At Schule Schloss Salem, teaching responsibility on the basis of democracy education has always been at the centre of our educational work. With the #IStandUp campaign, our pupils have the opportunity to set a nationwide signal, which is very popular with the young people and the teaching staff."

A milestone in democracy: the Basic Law celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Art teacher Mirjam Bendau took this as an opportunity to have the pupils in year eight design posters on the topic of fundamental and human rights as part of the #IStandUp campaign. Together with a classmate, Leo designed a poster that deals with the right to education. "We covered it in social studies and are therefore quite familiar with it," says the 14-year-old, "We can be really happy that we don't have to worry about this right. Not everyone feels that way." Another pupil, Nicolas, has dedicated his poster to equal rights. "It's simply a very important topic," he explains.
