More Than Just a Certificate

There are moments when an entire chapter of one’s life comes into focus. For 133 graduates, the 2026 graduation ceremony was just such a moment: as their names were called out, their certificates were presented and, finally, their graduation caps were thrown into the air. 81 of them completed the German Abitur programme, whilst 52 completed the International Baccalaureate. They come from 21 countries and have shaped Salem over the years as an international community of living and learning.
 

On this day, it was not only academic success that was celebrated. The graduation ceremony also provided an opportunity to reflect on how independence, reliability and courage, as well as the willingness to take responsibility for oneself and others, have developed during their time at school and in the boarding house. This development often begins in small ways – with a task during school service, a challenge on an expedition, a new friendship, or the moment when one dares to do something that previously seemed unthinkable. The extent to which perseverance, initiative and a sense of responsibility can grow from such experiences was also evident in the day’s awards: amongst others, 21 graduates received the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award.

Head of School Henrik Fass spoke of the “beginning of the transition”: with the end of school comes the freedom to shape one’s own path – and with it, the responsibility for one’s own thoughts and actions. Those who leave Salem therefore take more with them than just a school report: confidence in their own abilities, the experience of genuine community, and the courage to forge their own path.
