For theatre interested pupils, Schule Schloss Salem has a lot to offer. Theatre is encouraged throughout all stages of Salem, through the theatre extracurricular AG from grades 5-10, Theatre AG for college students, the IB theatre course and the mandatory Kolleg theatre program.
Theatre AG gives the opportunity through activities to learn new techniques, which help us be creative and improvise on the spot. The highlights of the theatre AG are the performances such as the "Slam", which gives the IB2 course the opportunity to perform their IB solo theatre piece that needs to be filmed and sent for grading. The AG adds to the performance by improvising on the spot, making a nice evening for the school community.
The One Acts on the other hand, are less about improvising and more about planning. One Acts are student written 7-15 minutes theatrical performances for AG actors to showcase their skills. For us students of the IB theatre course, the One Acts count as the collaborative project, a major part of the theatre syllabus. Whilst performing these pieces, the students of the IB have the opportunity to collect feedback from the audience on their performances. The feedback that the students collect is used to write their reflection on their collaborative project, graded by the IB along with the project itself.
Overall theatre in Salem is a substantial part of the everyday life of students even outside of the classroom setting, bringing life and colour to the teachers and student body.
