Growing Beyond Our Limits - Together
Outward Bound has been an integral part of the Salem programme for many years. From 7 to 19 June 2026, we – 54 Year 9 pupils – travelled to Rondane National Park in Norway. For many of us, what lay ahead was initially met with questions and uncertainty.
Every day, we covered around 15 kilometres. We carried our own tents, sleeping bags, food and cooking equipment; in the mornings we broke camp, and in the evenings we set up a new one. Gradually, everyone found their role within the group. We motivated one another and, as ‘Leader of the Day’, took responsibility for the route, pace and breaks.
The fifth day proved particularly challenging. Constant rain, wet clothes and exhaustion made this stage the toughest of the trip. It was precisely at this moment that the importance of solidarity became clear: No one was left behind, and together we pressed on.
A special part of the journey was the 24-hour solo section. Without a tent, mobile phone or company, there was time for rest, reflection and a letter to our future selves. The resupply of fresh food also changed our perspective on things we take for granted in everyday life: a hot meal, running water or a roof over our heads.
By the time we finally reached Base Camp, we had overcome many challenges. We had learnt to take responsibility, to persevere and to achieve more than we would previously have thought possible. These experiences will stay with us for a long time to come.
