Formal Dinner: Festive St. Martin's Goose and Musical Lantern Parade
by Sidonie Hischemöller, Mentor Rentamt
For St. Martin's Day, the traditional Formal Dinner and a lantern parade took place.

The week before, the Rentamt children explored their creativity and painted their lanterns. The Year 5 and 6 boys practised tying their ties with their Mentor beforehand, and the girls learned how to decorate each other's hair and rehearsed appearing in their dresses.

In the festively decorated large dining hall, everyone waited for the traditional Martinmas goose, which was ceremoniously carried in by a boy and girl from rentamt. Beforehand, the Heads of Boarding, Mrs. Mitchell and Mr. Baran, told the story of St. Martin and how the custom of eating goose on this day came about. Afterwards, Mr Baran carved the goose under the guidance of our chef Mr Müller. The delicacies from the kitchen were eaten with great relish. A highlight of the evening was the piano pieces played by one of the pupils.

Following the feast, the Rentamt children dressed warmly for the lantern procession. Singing songs, they paraded around the castle grounds with their lanterns. The finale was the sharing of Bürle, a traditional pastry from this area, to emphasise sharing.
