Interdisciplinary Learning for Responsibility and Sustainability

Kurt Hahn’s Ideas Newly Interpreted for the Future: A Mission of Holistic Responsibility

Schule Schloss Salem is a place of learning shaped by the founding vision of Kurt Hahn: to support young people in their personal development so they grow into individuals who take responsibility for themselves and for their communities. We are firmly committed to carrying this mission forward into the present day and beyond. The complexity of our world demands a holistic perspective. With this understanding, we encourage our students to recognise and comprehend the intricate interconnections that characterise modern life. In doing so, we prepare them in the best possible way for the global challenges of the future. At Schule Schloss Salem, holistic responsibility is not just taught – it is lived. It is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy.

Beyond the Human Perspective: Connectedness as a Fundamental of Salem’s Ethos

One Health is a contemporary, scientifically grounded response to the need for holistic responsibility. Promoted by organisations such as the WHO and the UN, the concept offers a powerful framework to experience the inseparable connection between mankind, animals, and the environment. Building on this concept, our students engage in active, participatory projects where they learn to take an active role in shaping solutions and assuming responsibility for their surroundings.

Wir richten unser Handeln und Lehren systematisch auf folgende Prinzipien aus:

Taking Responsibility

We teach that personal health is inseparably linked to the health of animals and wider ecoysystems. To take responsibility means to actively acknowledge and protect this triad of human, animal, and environmental wellbeing. Our goal is to help students understand that the health of the biosphere forms the foundation of sustasinable human development.

Recognising and Understanding Interdependence

In practice, this means thinking across disciplines. We explore connections that cross subject boundaries: How does the way we farm affect animal health, environmental quality – and in turn, our own wellbeing? By integrating biology, ecology, ethics, and the social sciences, we aim to foster a comprehensive understanding of complex systems of which our school community is just a part.

Thinking Sustainability, Holistically

We embrace a circular approach to resource use—from production to consumption—by closely tracing the journey of our food from farm to fork. Our aim is to promote sustainable food production, reduce our ecological footprint, and preserve resources for future generations.

Developing Competence: Where Responsibility Comes Alive

Our Projects

The best way to teach responsibility is to live it. At Schule Schloss Salem, students acquire and deepen valuable competencies through real and active, participatory projects.

Healthy Plates: Organic Certification of the School Kitchen

Through organic certification, we have taken the first step in a far-reaching transformation. Our menus now promise more organic, seasonal, and regional produce, while meat will be served more consciously and less frequently.

This development is also pedagogically significant: students are actively involved, learning not only what healthy eating means, but also how food production affects the environment and climate. The student-founded Food Council plays a central role in this process, contributing ideas for new dishes and working closely with the kitchen team to explore how healthy and sustainable eating can be put into practice in a large-scale kitchen.

In addition, the school garden in the grounds of Schloss Salem offers direct, hands-on experience of what it takes to grow food. This also encourages an understanding of natural cycles that support the cultivation process. In this way, we combine awareness of personal health with responsibility for people, animals, and the wider environment.

A Future Built on Meaningful Collaboration

The consistent realisation of our educational vision is supported by a strong network of renowned partners. Our partners include: Markgräflich Badischer Gutsbetrieb, Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic, Hofgut Rengoldshausen, and the Maria Streibich Foundation.

Markgräflich Badischer Gutsbetrieb

Schule Schloss Salem and the House of Baden have long shared close ties – not only because we are located on the same grounds. The estate has already transitioned to organic farming. Within our partnership, it takes a pioneering role in the field of One Health, serving as an inspiring example of sustainable agriculture in the region.
