Why We Celebrate the Dornier Foundation

by Dr Mavi Schellenberg, Chair of the Board Esther and Silvius Dornier Foundation
A personal story about opportunity, responsibility and the lasting impact of the Esther and Silvius Dornier Foundation – told on the occasion of a dignified memorial ceremony in Salem.

Thirty years ago, in 1995, curiosity, a love of learning and the hope of a fulfilling educational environment led me to Schule Schloss Salem. Quite old-fashionedly, it was an advertisement in Die Zeit that inspired me to apply. To my own surprise, I was given this opportunity, supported financially by scholarships and by the school itself – and a new chapter of my life began.

At the same time, Mr Silvius Dornier also took the initiative: his daughter had just been accepted at Hohenfels. The educational philosophy, life at a boarding school, the diversity of learning – all of this impressed Mr Dornier deeply, and, with the guidance of Dr Bueb, he decided to establish a foundation.

And so our paths crossed.

As the first scholarship holder of the Esther and Silvius Dornier Foundation, I was able to continue my journey in Salem. Since then, hundreds of other scholarship holders have followed. Young, committed people who not only enjoy learning and broadening their own horizons, but who also take an active role in community life. Keeping an open mind in all directions; helping where help is needed; providing leadership where there is unrest; taking personal responsibility within the community seriously – these are the qualities that characterise Esther and Silvius Dornier scholars, and which give us cause for joy year after year.

And on Saturday, 18 October 2025, we were finally able to honour the man (even if, in his modest way, he would not have wished for it) who set this wonderful wave in motion. Everything began in Salem – which makes me all the happier that a small maple tree now stands here. At a memorial ceremony for Silvius Dornier in the garden of the Rentamt, he was remembered with great dignity, from the founding of the foundation through to today’s scholarship holders in Salem.

May the maple tree grow, spread its branches, offer shade, and withstand wind and weather.

And, with a gentle twinkle of humour, remind us of a truly remarkable man.
