Taking Responsibility, Shaping Community: The Student Leadership Weekend 2025
The Student Leadership Weekend in Salem has long been an integral part of our school community – and a central element of the democratic education that forms the pedagogical foundation of Schule Schloss Salem. It marks the intentional beginning of the service year for those students who take on responsibility – as School Captains, Wing Helpers, Service Captains, Class Representatives or members of the Student Council. The weekend offers space for exchange, team building and inspiration, and serves as a reminder that every leadership position in Salem is not a title, but a commitment to serving the community.
Student Council member Johann R. reports on this year’s Leadership Weekend:
On Friday, 10 October 2025, this year’s weekend began with a relaxed pizza evening. In a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the student leaders got to know one another, shared first ideas, and received inspiring insights from Headmaster Henrik Fass into the tradition and meaning of Salem’s leadership roles.
Saturday was dedicated entirely to learning, collaboration and exchange. We started with a rhetoric workshop in which we were asked to choose any holiday destination. After a short preparation time to craft a speech, each of us tried to convince the others that our chosen destination was the best. Afterwards, everyone received brief feedback from their group. Following a short break, we continued with a debating workshop. We began with a simple ball game designed to show how important it is to listen to one another and to “pass the ball” in conversation – a symbolic exercise to foster active listening and mutual understanding. We then engaged in short debates, practicing how to present arguments precisely and respectfully.
After another break, the Student Council convened for its first constituting meeting. Key positions such as Council Speaker, Translator, Secretary and Treasurer were elected. Together, we reviewed the rules of procedure point by point, laying the foundation for a democratic and well-functioning Council year.
