Isn’t Latin a bit like a mosaic, too?
Today we made mosaics. In the morning, we – the grade 6 students – took the bus to Meersburg. From there, we took the ferry across the lake to Constance. Once we arrived, we got on another bus that took us straight to the Archaeological State Museum. There, we put our rucksacks in a locker and headed upstairs, where we listened to a guided tour about a sailor named Cornelius Aliquandus.
After the tour, we were allowed to create our own mosaics! Here’s how it worked: first, we chose small stones to stick onto a wooden board. Everyone picked different ones – some were colourful, others more muted – but all of them looked great. Once we had our stones, we planned our mosaic by placing them on a template. Then we glued them onto the wooden board. When all the stones were in place, we had to wait a little while for the glue to dry. After that, we covered our mosaics with a kind of cement that holds the stones together. Then we had to wait again for it to dry. Once everything had set, we washed off the extra cement – and our mosaics looked AMAZING. We could even choose whether or not we wanted to brush them with oil to give them a nice finish.
After the mosaics were done, we all got to pick an ice cream and enjoy it.
After a long day, we returned to Salem feeling very happy with our trip.
