From pH in Lemon Juice to the Potato Cannon
by Artem Komarov, IB 1
In the IB's Group 4 project, our students conduct their own experiments.

The Group 4 project is a piece of work that all IB 1 students must complete. In this project, students from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science work together in groups of 3-5 people on a topic that they agree on. Each group can freely choose a topic that is related to any of these sciences.

Even though the Group 4 project is mandatory it turned out to be a fun experience. The first thing is that you can choose a topic you like, and which is interesting for you. It is also about communication with your group because your group is mixed and you will have at least 1 person from each science so you all can share knowledge that each of you has and help each other.

You have 1 full day and 2 lessons to complete your investigation. Thus, to efficiently use our time, we did all the preliminary research and background information gathering in the first two sessions, and on the full-day session, we carried out the experiment, collected data, analyzed it, did some calculations, then did some more calculations and then some more calculations... Finally, we got our final results which we were very happy about.

When we were nearly finished, I looked at what other groups had done. It was amazing how each group got completely different ideas and experiments. You could see everything from potato cannons to some beakers filled with strange acid-type liquids. In the end, each group had a colorful poster that included all the work they had done including graphs, calculations, and background info. Overall, I personally enjoyed it and I believe this was a very interesting experience in our scientific lives.
