Duke of Edinburgh: 3rd Training Expedition
by Julia, Abi 1
For our Duke Gold participants, the third and final training expedition is on the agenda.

From the 11th to the 13th of July, the third training expedition for us, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award graduates, took place in the Hegau region north of Hohentwiel near Singen. The weather forecast was not the best. Nevertheless, we set off confidently and covered the prescribed twenty kilometres on the first day in temperatures of 30°C and more. It was with mixed feelings that we approached the thunderstorm forecast for the evening of the same day. Fortunately, all the walkers were able to find shelter on the various farms in time to escape the oncoming storm. The evening was a spectacle of thunder and lightning, and it rained heavily during the night.

On the second day, the weather was fine again. Our group had to climb a lot of altitude, which was quite a challenge. However, we were rewarded with beautiful views and a break at our checkpoint. That same evening we were lucky that there were no more thunderstorm warnings and we were able to spend the night in a tent under the stars, as is customary at the Duke Award.

Cooling off at the Quarry Pond

On the third and final day, we walked to our final destination, the Hohenkrähen. Given the rather high temperatures, we were glad that we had planned our walk to take us past a nearby quarry pond. We jumped in without further ado and were able to forget about the exertions of the previous days for a while. When we arrived back at the Hohenkrähen car park at around 4pm, we were really proud of ourselves for completing the third training expedition.
