Charity Run: Running Together to Make Education Possible
When I began planning the charity run a few months ago, I had no idea how many small steps would be involved. Numerous emails, coordination efforts and organisational questions accompanied the preparation. All the more rewarding, then, was seeing everything come together on that Saturday and watching the event turn into a great success.
Students from a wide range of year groups took part in the run itself – from our youngest Rentamt-students right through to College, with even the Salem Kolleg represented. Together, they created a fantastic atmosphere along the route. Many encouraged one another to complete additional laps, cheered each other on and supported each other throughout. It became clear just how strong the sense of community within our school truly is. At the end of the day, everyone gathered once more. Over a shared evening meal of Schnitzelbrötchen and potato salad, we brought the charity run to a relaxed and enjoyable close.
After two hours of running around Schloss Spetzgart, we had completed a total of 561 laps together. With each lap measuring approximately 800 metres, this corresponds to a distance of 448.8 kilometres – a truly remarkable achievement. In total, €3,366 was raised in donations – a sum that clearly shows how much can be achieved through collective commitment.
With these donations, we support the Fly & Help Foundation, which is dedicated to building schools in countries with limited access to education and infrastructure. The idea originated from a chance personal meeting with the founder, Reiner Meutsch, whom I had the opportunity to meet during last summer’s holiday. His vision and work left a strong impression on me. This inspired the idea of organising a charity run through which our school community could make a small contribution towards helping more children around the world gain access to education. The funds raised will go towards the construction of a school building for primary school children in New Chiraa, Ghana.
For me personally, the project was a very formative experience. Through the planning and organisation, I learned a great deal about what it takes to prepare and carry out an initiative like this. Looking back, the charity run was not only a successful project, but also an experience from which I gained a great deal on a personal level.
Special thanks go above all to the students who took part in the charity run with such dedication and perseverance, making this result possible in the first place. We would also like to thank all supporters – especially the parents, the staff of Schule Schloss Salem and Salem College, the members of the ASV, and many others from the school community. Your commitment played a decisive role in the success of the charity run.
