100 Years of Friends of Salem

by Britta Stocker (Friends of Salem Office)
At the general meeting and the subsequent anniversary party, it became clear how much passion and cohesion have united the Friends of Salem for a century.

The Friends of Salem - the supporting association of Schule Schloss Salem - celebrated a special anniversary on 17 October: their 100th birthday. The "Vereinigung der Förderer" was founded just five years after the school was founded. To this day the association continues to support the development of Schule Schloss Salem and the big and small wishes of Salem's students.

Chairmen Oliver Fischer and Dr Günther Metzner hosted the annual general meeting in the Salemer Schrote at lunchtime. Beforehand, they took a short tour of the Rentamt, where the 5th and 6th grade students gave an impressive presentation on how they live and learn at Schule Schloss Salem. After that, more than 40 attending members voted on the new applications and projects, including new walkie-talkies for the youth fire brigade, a Roman history field trip to Trier for the Latin class, material for the Salem tree house, bicycle helmets, a junior training model for the Emergency First Aid Service and much more. In total of over 35,000 euros in funding was approved. The live presentations by the students from Salem impressed the guests and gave a good insight into where the funding will go.

In the evening, the celebrations continued in a special venue: over 200 Salem parents and members of the Friends gathered for the "Anniversary Night of Friends" in the Salem Reithalle. With excellent food, cocktails, dancing and lively conversations to exchange ideas and get to know each other, the guests enjoyed a joyful evening together.

There were musical performances from Salem students, culminating in a song from the new Salem school band under the direction of Claudia Wick. The Premium Style Band kept the dance floor full until late into the night - with a mix of classics from past decades and current hits. A special highlight was the moment when the Salem committee chairmen and the school representative team congratulated the Friends of Salem on their 100th birthday with flowers and warm words. The Chairman of the Supervisory Board Till Schreiter, Headmaster Henrik Fass and Business Manager Thomas Obitz surprised the Friends with a video of the unveiling of the "Friends of Salem" lettering on the Salem donor wall - a special honour for such a dedicated partnership. While the huge anniversary cake was presented and golden confetti rained down, Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" was sung together and the party took off. The photo booth provided fun and mischief, creating some amusing memories of this wonderful evening.
