Field Hockey? Salem!

Salem School Sport Since 1920

Hockey is more than just a sport at Schule Schloss Salem - it is tradition, team spirit and part of our identity. Since the school was founded in 1920, hockey has been an integral part of our school life. As early as 1919, school founder Kurt Hahn established the hockey club in Salem - with the aim that all Salem residents should play the game.

This is how hockey became a classic school sport in Salem - in a region where the sport is otherwise hardly known. Hockey still has a special place in our school today: every pupil comes into contact with the sport during their time at school - be it in sport lessons, as an elective sport course or in one of our four school teams. Whether with or without prior experience - our hockey programmme offers the right introduction for every level of participant.

“In Salem, hockey is more than just movement - it's an encounter. Personality, team spirit and perseverance grow on the pitch.”
Lars Watermann, Hockey-enthusiastic alumni and father of a current student.

All About Hockey in Salem

Field Hockey in Everyday School Life

Lower school (Grades 5-6)

In the lower school, our youngest pupils learn hockey in regular sports lessons - supplemented by the elective field hockey course for those who are particularly interested.

Middle school (Grades 7-10)

In grades 7 and 8, hockey is firmly anchored in the timetable as a compulsory sport course. In grades 9 and 10, we offer field hockey as an elective sport - with a focus on technical and tactical elements. From grade 9 onwards, there is also the opportunity to become a member of a school team, thereby taking part in official matches and tournaments.

Upper School / College (Grades 11-12)

Hockey remains an important part of the sports programmme at College - as a sporting balance, performance training and team activity. Students new to the sport can participate in the mixed training group, and more advance players can attend selection try-outs to join a College team.

Our School Teams

If you want to play more, you can try out to join one of our four school teams:

  • Middle School Girls
  • Middle School Boys
  • College Girls
  • College boys

Each team trains twice a week. In the Middle School, a session lasts 60 minutes, at College there is one 60-minute and one 90-minute session.

Training Locations & Infrastructure
  • Autumn/Winter (indoor): Training in the sports hall at Schloss Salem
  • Spring/summer (outdoor): Training on the new Olympic-standard artificial grass pitch at Härlen
  • Additional training on the artificial grass pitch at Schloss Salem
  • Middle School teams train and play matches at Härlen
Competitions & Talent Development
  • Annual participation in both indoor and outdoor  “Jugend trainiert für Olympia” competitions for  various age groups. Our sporting goal is always to win the competition at regional level and qualify for the state finals.
  • Formation of U16 and U18 teams (m/f), competing in the Baden-Württemberg league as Hockey Club Salem - if the level of play and team size allow it
  • Friendly matches against other boarding schools (e.g. Birklehof) and regional clubs (Konstanz, Markdorf)
