Following the traditional Friday evening gatherings of individual class years in various restaurants, all returning alumni came together on the Saturday of Whitsun weekend on the Härlen campus. It was a small, but fine event with a variety of activities, ranging from a podium discussion with the author and former ambassador to Moscow, Rüdiger von Fritsch (class of 1973) and Isabel Hénin (née Krüger; class of 1992), the current ambassador to Mauretania; to a selection of songs from “Carmina Burana” and a performance by the College band. Naturally there was no shortage of fine culinary delights, allowing the Altsalemer to enjoy themselves thoroughly in the best weather Lake Constance has to offer.
For Salem’s students the highlight was undoubtedly the hockey match. After many triumphant years, the alumni team had to accept defeat and finally hand over the trophy to the school team. But this could hardly put a damper on spirits, and the guests let the day come to a close in a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere.
An absolute treat on the evening programme was the presentation by our emergency service groups. The pre-scripted scenario included a wide spectrum of skilled actions: treating injuries, extinguishing a fire, climbing up a telescope ladder and much more. The technical relief service (THW), the fire brigade, and the first aid team of Salem College were able to demonstrate what they had learned in their many training exercises.
Now, as always, when one ASV comes to an end, planning for the next one begins. The next ASV Whitsun reunion in 2023 will be a big event and is already eagerly anticipated. We want to thank all the “helping hands” for their support and all who attended for making this a very special event.
