Sports, Handicrafts and Films during the Salem Weekend
by Justin Sperling, 6D1 und Thilo Wiggenhauser
Spending a weekend in and around Schloss Salem: Grades 5 and 6 enjoyed a variety of leisure activities during their school weekend at the beginning of November.

The official “Salem Weekend” of the 2nd epoch took place on 7-8 November 2020. On Saturday we held a dodge ball tournament. It was really cool because all the dorm wings played against each other. In a game of dodge ball, which is like the German game of Völkerball, players have to avoid getting hit by the ball of the opposite team; good throwing and catching play an important role. The best part of the tournament was that we won. Afterwards, at the film evening we watched the fantasy film “Onward“. It was funny and exciting.

On Sunday we were allowed to sleep in, and in the late morning we had a chance to do arts and crafts. Some enjoyed it more than others. We made Christmas decorations for our dorm building, the Rentamt. Afterwards we all got to use our mobile phones, one of our favourite times of the week. Then we went to the sports field to do some running: first 800 metres, then 400, 200 and 100 metre runs. It was supposed to be a training day for the traditional Buß- und Bettaglauf held on the church’s Day of Repentance in mid-November, but the run was later cancelled for this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Then we played some football and after dinner we continued with our handicrafts projects. In the evening we watched the animated film “Avatar – The Last Airbender“.

Two students in Year 6 give their answers to three questions:

What was your favourite moment during the Salem Weekend?

Justin Sperling: Getting to use our mobile phones on Sunday, because we could talk with our parents. Another favourite moment was watching the film “Avatar – The Last Airbender“ in the Rentamtstube. The series is very funny.

Wangzuoyi Qian: Winning the dodge ball tournament against the other wings in the Rentamt. Hurrah! I was very happy about that.

What other kind of tournament could you imagine playing?

Justin Sperling: It would be great to have a video game tournament between the wings. We could play in our wings’ common rooms and challenge each other online.

Wangzuoyi Qian: Basketball and football would make interesting wing tournaments. Then we would be able to see how good the other students on other wings can play. Last year there was already a basketball tournament between the dorm wings.

What would you like to do on another Salem Weekend?

Justin und Wangzuoyi: We would like to go on an excursion. To another village or to a playground with a climbing course. Then we could get to know new places and have some new adventures.
