On a journey through time to the Middle Ages
At the end of October, grades 7 went on an excursion under the motto "Experience the Middle Ages up close". A perfect rounding off of the topic in the 1st epoch history lessons: "Places of life in the Middle Ages".

Early in the morning, the bus took them to the "Campus Galli" in Meßkirch, an hour's drive from Salem, to a unique monastery building site modelled on a real plan from the 9th century.

Once there, the pupils explored the medieval monastery town together with their history teachers. The craftsmen working there answered all their questions and offered an exciting insight into their work. On site, you can see how a piece of this medieval monastery is recreated day by day, but not with modern-day machines, only with medieval tools and methods, all by hand and without technology, in all weathers. The Salem classes were lucky with the weather, however, and so the pupils spent an instructive morning on their way along the 52 buildings on the monastery grounds. They saw replica barns, stables, dwellings, a wooden church and the numerous workshops of the many craftsmen, including blacksmiths, saddlers, tanners, shoemakers, knife sharpeners, turners, sword sweepers and coopers.

After the classes had fortified themselves with “Bratwurst”, lentil stew or “Flammkuchen” in medieval style, a "ralley" started with various questions about life in the Middle Ages: "Which herbs help against which diseases?", "How does the wood turner's seesaw bench work?", "How are shingles attached to a roof?". When all the tasks were finally solved with diligence, they returned to Salem, tired from an instructive and exciting day.
