As the day-to-day language of International Summer School Spetzgart is English, it is essential that all participants have had a minimum of four years of English lessons in school. This is in order that they are able to understand the instructions and information given. There is no minimum requirement for German.
Students must choose to study either English or German. Lessons take place for three hours each morning (Monday – Friday).
All students sit a placement test before starting their chosen language course. In conjunction with the handwritten essay sent in with the application form, this test will be use to allocate students to an appropriate teaching group.
The English course is taught by four experienced native English speaking teachers, who each focus closely on one aspect of the curriculum. All students will be taught by each of the teachers who will teach a variety of written and oral skills geared to their appropriate level. These will include grammar, comprehension, literature, composition, introductory economics, and business English. They will also all be involved in the production of a course magazine which they take home at the end of the programme. Class sizes range from 10 – 14 students.
Students studying German will be divided into three teaching groups. Beginners will cover basic language skills and a priority will be given to conversation. Intermediate students will read and discuss newspaper articles, short stories, and play scenes to further their knowledge of German culture and the language. They will read challenging and engaging texts and discuss a wide variety of topics in order to improve their grammar and widen their vocabulary. Through the study of literature, advanced students will be encouraged to compose essays and written articles on different topics. All students also contribute to the course magazine which they take home at the end of the programme. All our teachers on the German course are native speakers with many years of teaching experience in both German and German as a foreign language. Class sizes range from 8 – 12 students.
