Salem is an international living and learning community based on the foundation of a cosmopolitan, holistic education. As a general rule teachers are employed who are qualified to teach at grammar schools; nevertheless, the educational field at Salem also includes other professional areas, such as the housekeeper (Hausdame), librarian and nurse. Salem additionally employs assistants who can gain experience for six months during the schooling and boarding-school life.
Normally, teachers commence their employment as internal staff, i.e. they look after a Wing at the boarding school and hold a teaching post at the same time. The boarding-school accommodation is rented at favourable conditions. Moving expenses are reimbursed. Our staff have a wide range of possibilities for structuring the schooling and boarding-school life and for playing an active role in the school's development. Furthermore, professional personnel management, evaluation and possibilities for further training open up opportunities for one's own personal development.
Teaching staff have the possibility of becoming civil servants at Salem, and leave of absence for civil servants from their civil service is also common practice there. The salary is paid in accordance with the TV-L (German collective agreement for civil service in the "Länder") plus special payments for their additional internal services at the boarding school.
