One of the long-standing features of Schule Schloss Salem is that children and young people have been separated from one another across several locations in their respective age groups to allow appropriate education and training. However, this variety of locations has always posed certain disadvantages. Only rarely could all students be perceived as a single school community, cross-site events were organised only with considerable effort, the various structures and services in the school and boarding houses were difficult to coordinate with one another and the cooperation and communication between teachers was rendered more difficult.
The management of the school has therefore been pursuing for some time the vision of converging the present four locations - Hohenfels (lower school), Salem (middle school) and Spetzgart and the Härlen (college) - into a single site, known as the Schloss Salem merger. As representatives, the Schule Schloss Salem Board e.V. (registered association) supported the management by an overwhelming majority at its meeting of 7 March 2015. As a first step, years 5 to 7 from Hohenfels will join together with classes 8 to 10 at Salem. This project will now be planned and implemented in detail.
Schule Schloss Salem is combining this growing together of its schools with the expectation of a fundamental, educational overhaul. From the perspective of the management, "breathing" open structures will provide the possibility to respond flexibly to demographic, educational and social change. And while years 5 to 7 live and learn in Salem in a very child-friendly area, the school will be able to bring areas and spacious rooms in the south wing of the castle into use, allowing the specific needs of grades 8 to 10 to become even better addressed in the future.
After decades of debate, this clarification of internal site structures at Schule Schloss Salem will ensure quality and diversity of educational practice and strengthen community life in the boarding school. Furthermore, it will release financial and educational resources that will benefit Salem students in the future. Accordingly, Schule Schloss Salem is moving forward cautiously but with great vigour, as well as with excitement for the largest regeneration phase in its history.
On the 7th November 2015 our Board of Trustees endorsed the plans of both the school management and the supervisory board to unite our lower and middle schools at Salem Castle.
To achieve this important step Schule Schloss Salem will invest massively in further improvements to the pedagogical and boarding structures for our class years five to ten. A brochure provides more detailed information about this vision for the future.
