Offering Insights into our Day-to-Day Lives in a Digital Meet & Greet
Interested visitors could experience Schule Schloss Salem online at the end of January 2022.

What makes Salem so special? What is it like to live in a boarding school? What happens if I get homesick? These are all questions that interested students and parents ask us when they are thinking about applying for admission to Schule Schloss Salem. These families recently had the opportunity to take part in an online meet & greet event and get answers to all their questions.

On 29 January 2022 the Head of Admissions, Dr. Stephanie Nau, as well as three pupils and a teacher assembled in the Middle School's Study Hall: Pixie, representing members of Grades 5 and 6 who reside in the Rentamt; Titus from Grade 9; Catalina as the representative from the Upper School; and teacher Peter Wimmer. Together they presented various aspects of life in Salem during a casual, interactive round of questions and answers. In my role as student journalist, I was able to witness the presentation on site from behind the camera while also following the event online.

Afterwards ten-year old Pixie summed up her experience: “I was very nervous at the beginning, but after a while it seemed like nothing more than answering a few questions. Because I could not see the audience, it was much easier than I expected.” Following a brief introduction given by the Head of Boarding in Salem Castle, Stefan Steinebach, the presentations revolved around day-to-day life in the boarding school wings (the Mentorate) and Salem’s method of facilitating learning by head, heart and hand. Afterwards each of the presenters described what makes Salem so special from his or her point of view. For Titus it is the communal life with fellow pupils on his wing; Catalina highlighted the benefits of internationality at Salem; and Mr Wimmer placed emphasis on the fact that life in Salem is never boring due to the variety of activities and the many different personalities found among pupils and teachers.

"The online open tour day was a creative approach to introduce Schule Schloss Salem to others all over the world, given the covid-19 restrictions. However, taking part in this event was a wonderful experience since I was able to share my experiences as well as present Schule Schloss Salem from a student’s point of view. I find that hosting the open tour day online made the event convenient yet also well organized, and most of all informative."
