A Delicious Meal and a Touch of Las Vegas
The Formal Christmas Dinner and the Casino Night brought a lot of joy and music to the Esssaal in Spetzgart.

It was the afternoon of Friday, 17th of December 2021, and the Salem College had become a boiling kettle. There is bubbling and screeching as every student gets ready for the biggest event of the epoch: the Formal Christmas Dinner. Suits are being pressed and shirts ironed at the last minute, every strand of hair meticulously tucked into place to achieve photographic perfection. At six p.m., buses would arrive in Spetzgart to chauffeur one hundred fifty students to Härlen.

Soon after the grand champagne reception, the crowd began to flow into the Esssal, where a three-course meal was served:  tomato soup, fillet steak, and apricot cream, an exquisite meal made possible through the hard work of the kitchen staff. Throughout dinner we were delighted by two prodigious piano performances by Max and Eileen. This was followed by the first instalment of SNL (Salem Night Live), a talk show which the hosts, Jacob and Jan, insisted had “nothing to do with Saturday Night Live“. The show closed with a heated battle between Mr. Corbett and Mr. Sagastume, fighting for the glory of being able to tell the best dad jokes.

The evening flew by quickly until it was time to move back to the Aula where the jazz band entertained us with most astounding performances of familiar pop songs. Then the drum-sets and pianos gave way to card game and gambling tables, marking the beginning of the Casino Night. For a moment it felt like we had landed in Las Vegas. Then, just two hours later, the buses arrived again, putting an end to an evening of laughter and entertainment. The school and everyone who participated in the organization of this lovely evening certainly has our utmost gratitude.
