Diversity Leads to Mastery
Our Athletic Program
Regular, intensive training, sometimes also several times a week, prepares students for participation in the German national sports competition, "Youth Trains for the Olympics" and official matches, tournaments, and also "friendlies" with other schools and boarding schools.
Among the real highlights of boarding school are the matches held between the Upper and Middle School, the so-called "Salem-Spetz Games."
Besides soccer, basketball and hockey our traditional school sports include volleyball, rugby, and badminton.
At least two different team sports are also taught during the sports lessons; in the afternoons there is a wide range of sports offered, even for those who are not members of a school team.
Running and swimming are two types of individual sport at Salem that have a long tradition. In the summer months at Salem the Lower and Middle School students start their day with the early-morning run at the castle grounds just as they did nearly 100 years ago. The run at Salem on the Day of Prayer and Repentance (Buß- und Bettagslauf) in November, earning running badges in the Lower School, and an all-school charity run are fixed events in boarding school's annual calendar.
All-School Sports Night
At the end of each school year students from all levels of school gather to compete in mixed-year teams at a variety of events, including hockey, basketball and Soccer.
