The Outdoor Education curriculum at Schule Schloss Salem comprises the central, fundamental, educational adventure concepts of the School's founder, Kurt Hahn. It is a basic requirement for each schoolchild to participate in different Outdoor Education activities during his/her school days at Salem.
For example, the Outdoor Weeks are held at the Lower School at various different centres and focus on integration. At the Middle School, all the children in Form 9 go on the traditional Outward Bound Expeditions, this being at the very heart of Salem's education, when they travel through the wilderness for 14 days. At the Upper School, the points of focus can be set individually, for example, within the scope of the Outdoor Weekend. For gaining the "International Award", all the schoolchildren can complete outdoor expeditions for taking this internationally approved badge for young people.
A professional association for Outdoor Education consisting of particularly qualified specialists caters for the content structure and in particular, the technical aspects relating to safety.
